In this article, I'm going to delve into the world of shoe anatomy to take a lookall parts of a shoe. I'm looking at both high-heeled pumps and flatter lace-up shoes, so you've got all your bases covered when it comes to your footwear lexicon. I also have plenty of illustrations so you'll know exactly what we're talking about as we go along.

Different parts of a shoe - pumps

We started with high heel pumps for women. While some of the shoe parts are the same for all shoes, heels typically have not only different parts, but fewer components than others.types of shoes.

The Superior

The upper part of a high heel includes all parts above the sole and heel of the shoe.

The vamp is basically the top and sides of the heel. It covers the top of the foot and extends from the toe of the shoe to the quarter.

The sewn edge that runs along the vamp and quarter is called the top thread. It connects the upper to the lining while shaping the shoe's upper.

insole

The insole is the inner part of the shoe where the sole of the foot rests. Although the insole is often padded to provide arch support and general comfort when walking or standing (unlike the insoles in other types of shoes), the insoles in women's heels are generally not removable or padded.

Coating

Lining is a material lining the inside of the shoe that your foot comes into direct contact with on the sides and top of the shoe. The lining serves to cover the rough seams on the inside of the shoe.

haste

Somewhere between the sole and lining is a shank built into the shoe that is not visible. The upper is made from a rigid material such as plastic, metal or wood and adds extra strength to the sole of the shoe.

The shank in the heels supports the buttress and arch of the foot.

The sole is made up of several different parts and encompasses everything underneath the upper, including the heel and all non-visible components like the upper.

The sole is the outer part of the sole where the shoe touches the ground.

Seat

The heel seat or seat is where the heel connects to the bottom of the shoe.

Shoe clearance, or sometimes called shoe drop, refers to the difference in height between the height of the heel and the base of the sole of the shoe. Heel is measured from the seat of the heel to the bottom of the heel, not including the top.

When measuring the stride of a pair of platform heels, you need to consider the thickness of the platform under the forefoot.

The heel instep is the front edge of the heel. It is often constructed as a continuous piece of material that runs along the sole, most commonly in expensive high-heeled shoes.

top piece

Sometimes called the heel toe or upper rise, the top piece is the heel toe of the shoe that touches the ground. It is usually made of durable, non-slip material such as rubber or plastic and provides traction while walking.

The Superior

Just like the parts of high heel pumps we discussed above, the upper is basically all the components of a shoe above the sole.

The vamp forms the upper part of the front and sides of a shoe, extending from the toe to the heel. The upper is usually a solid piece of material on pumps, but on other types of shoes it is usually made up of different pieces sewn together.

collar

Size

The shoe's waistband is in the middle of the shoe, where it's usually narrowest. Shoes that offer better arch support tend to have a narrower waist.

Language

The shoe's tongue is an extra (sometimes padded) strip of material attached to the vamp that runs to the neck of the shoe. It rests on the top of the foot under the eyelets and protects the top of the foot from chafing from the laces.

The piping is basically the "seam" between the sole and the upper. The frame may look different on different shoes. On dress shoes, this is usually a piece of leather sewn around the bottom edge of the upper where the sole is sewn.

The heel is attached to the bottom of the sole at the back of the shoe and serves to lift the heel of the foot, making the wearer taller.

Backstay

That extra strip of material that you sometimes find in shoes that run vertically from the topline to the top of the sole on the back of the cap is called the backstay.

heel tab

Commonly found inChelsea-Stiefel, sneakers, and casual shoes, a heel tab is a loop of fabric attached to the back of the shoe. It's often just for decoration, but heel tabs were originally developed to make it easier to put on shoes and boots.

Achilles notch

The Achilles notch is the small notch on the collar at the back of the shoe. It is designed to give the Achilles tendon more freedom of movement when walking and running. It is most commonly found in running shoes.
