• Subroutines are "exclusive". If you apply for one of these programs, your application will only be visible to that sub-programme's selection committee until their selections are finalized. If you do not select, your application will be released to the global SIP application pool.
• Finally,many NIH institutes and centers have their own summer programs. A list of these programs can be found herehere. All of these require you to complete the general SIP application, but may have different requirements or eligibility criteria. If you have any questions, please contact the programs directly.

Program description

Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide the opportunity to spend a summer working at NIH, side-by-side with some of the world's leading scientists in an environment dedicated solely to biomedical research (at NIH includes " biomedical research" everything from behavioral and social sciences, through biology and chemistry, to physics, mathematical modeling, computational biology and biostatistics). NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1,150 laboratories/research groups on its main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area, as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD. Explore Triangle Park, NC; Hamilton, M.T.; Framingham, Massachusetts; and Phoenix, AZ. PLEASE NOTE: Seating in Hamilton, Framingham and Phoenix is ​​limited.

Internships generally last a minimum of eight weeks, with students arriving at NIH in June. NIH Institutes/Centers and the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) sponsor a wide variety of summer activities, including orientation to get interns off to a good start, summer lectures with leading NIH researchers, career/professional development workshops, wellness activities, and Summer Poster Day .

Fitness

The Summer Internship Program 2023 is intended for students who

• you are 17 years or older on June 15, 2023,
• are U.S. citizens or permanent residents,IN
• be enrolled at least half-time at an accredited college (including community college) or university as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional school student at the time of application*;OF
• have graduated from high school but have been accepted into an accredited college or university program for the fall semester.

*U.S. residents must participate or have been acceptedinstitutions in the US

People from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in health sciences. Students with a disability. students eligible for the Pell Grant. students enrolled in racial colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, or historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs); students who identify as LGBTQ and individuals disadvantaged by circumstances that have negatively affected their educational opportunities, including recent natural disasters, are encouraged to apply.

Check their background:All scholarship offers are contingent on your ability to successfully pass a federal background check, which is required for reasonable and physical access to NIH facilities and systems. As part of the approval process, you will be asked questions about a variety of topics, including citizenship, criminal history, and other personal information. A specific question you will be asked is, "Have you used, possessed, supplied, or manufactured illegal drugs in the past year?"This question is about the use of controlled substances or drugs as defined by federal law. Keep in mind that while marijuana may be legal or decriminalized in your jurisdiction, it remains illegal under US federal law. The use, possession, supply or production of marijuana may prevent you from obtaining the necessary permits to participate in NIH inpatient training programs, even if you were initially offered a job. Registration procedure

Potential applicants mustRegister online. The application is available from November 15 to March 1. Submission required

Applicants may also indicate the general topics, scientific methodologies and/or disease/organ systems of interest.

Selection

The NIH Summer Internship Program is highly competitive. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis from November through April by scientists at NIH Institutes and Centers.Individual scientists select their own summer interns and provide their funding. there is no central selection process and OITE plays no role.Our data shows that applicants who submit their materials in the first two weeks have a success rate almost 3 times higher than those who submit in the two weeks just before the deadline. Applicants will be notified of their selection by the Institute or the Recruitment Center, usually before 1 May. Successful candidates must submit the following documents to their institute or center before commencing their degree:

• Official college or graduate/professional school transcripts
• Proof of US citizenship or permanent resident status. US citizens can provide a copy of their birth certificate or passport. Permanent residents must submit a copy of their (green) permanent residence permit.

SIP-subroutines

One of NIH's goals is to create a highly diverse and inclusive scientific workforce. To that end, NIH's Office of Intramural Education and Training welcomes applications for multiple specific SIP subprograms. The sub-programs are designed for community college students, students who would not normally have the opportunity to attend research projects during the academic year, early graduate students in biomedical sciences, and students enrolled in graduate programs in data science and computer science. Please note that an individual is normally only eligible for ONE sub-program.

Community College Summer Enrichment Program (CCSEP):In the summer of 2023, NIH will again offer a SIP subprogram designed to recruit community college students for NIH. Students in the CCSEP can take advantage of all the opportunities available to other SIP interns. In addition, they will be committed to completing a comprehensive enrichment program. College Summer Opportunities for Advanced Research (C-SOAR):The goal of the program is to encourage a diverse group of individuals to consider careers in the biomedical sciences. In addition to conducting full-time research in a lab or project at NIH, C-SOAR interns will meet weekly as a team with students in the Community College Summer Enrichment Program (CCSEP). Together they will participate in workshops and courses aimed at developing academic and professional skills in preparation for careers in healthcare and social, behavioral and biomedical research.Read more about C-SOAR.

Virtual Summer Opportunities to Advance Research (V-SOAR):We are pleased to announce a new summer internship program designed for a virtual learning environment only with an emphasis on genomics research. The Virtual Summer Opportunities to Advance Research (V-SOAR) program encourages a diverse group of students who are unable to move to one of the NIH campuses this summer to conduct genomics research in collaboration with NIH scientists in a VIRTUAL environment . V-SOAR trainees meet daily as a group from 10am. to noon EDT to learn more about genomics research and the approaches and concepts needed to analyze genomic datasets. In addition to daily meetings, V-SOAR interns will prepare presentations, read scientific papers, and analyze genome datasets for group discussions. Each V-SOAR intern is assigned an NIH mentor to guide them through these activities. V-SOAR interns will participate in wellness-focused workshops and courses and develop academic and professional skills in preparation for careers in healthcare and social, behavioral and biomedical research.Read more about V-SOAR.

OfAmgen Fellows Program at NIHis a collaboration between the Amgen Foundation, the Foundation for NIH, and the NIH Office of Intramural Education and Training. This program is designed for undergraduate students interested in learning more about health inequalities and the role that science, policy, and community engagement can play in eliminating them. Preference will be given to students who do not have an opportunity during the school year to conduct independent research (because of family responsibilities, financial needs, or the inability of their institutions to provide such opportunities). Amgen Fellows from NIH will spend the summer working at NIH's main campus in Bethesda. The program will have four main components: 1) independent research conducted under the direction of an intramural NIH scientist; 2) roundtable discussions exploring the intersection of research and public policy on health inequalities; 3) Career guidance and mentoring aimed at the wide range of biomedical careers. and 4) leadership training focused on the skills needed to work successfully in team-oriented global research environments. Summer Graduate Opportunity to Advance Research (G-SOAR):In the summer of 2016, NIH launched a SIP subprogram designed around the unique experiences of biomedical science graduate students. G-SOAR students spend the summer at NIH's main campus in Bethesda, Maryland, or at other Maryland campuses. In addition to working on a research team at NIH, G-SOAR students will participate in an enriched curriculum to help them develop critical thinking and graduate survival skills, provide career guidance and mentorship focused on a wide variety of biomedical careers, and emphasize leadership training . that focuses on the skills needed to operate successfully in team-based and global research environments. Graduate Data Science Summer Program (GDSSP):This program is a collaboration between the NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education and the newly formed NIH Office of Data Science Strategy. The GDSSP is designed for computer and data science graduate students with an interest in the biomedical research enterprise. GDSSP students will spend the summer working at NIH, side-by-side with some of the world's leading biomedical researchers. In addition to working in a research team, GDSSP students will participate in a tailored curriculum that will help them explore the many applications of data science in biomedical research and improve their leadership skills such as self-awareness, resilience, conflict management, effective coaching, and emotional intelligence . Summer Opportunities for Medical Students to Advance Research (M-SOAR):The NIH OITE in collaboration withPARTICIPATEis pleased to announce a new summer internship specifically designed for first-year medical students with a focus on translational research. M-SOAR students will spend the summer at NIH working with some of the world's leading clinical scientists in an environment dedicated solely to biomedical research. During their NIH internship, M-SOAR students will conduct research with a mentor in the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP). They are immersed in a culture of translational science and explore elements of the enterprise of basic, translational, and clinical research.Read more about M-SOAR.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON THE SUBPROGRAM:

1. While you use the online SIP application to apply for all of these sub-programs, eligibility criteria, application deadlines, and curricula vary (see a comparison chart for SIP plans). Read the description of each program carefully to decide which program best suits your needs.
2. If you choose to apply for a subprogram, your application will not be available as part of the general SIP program (and NIH researchers will not be able to see it) until subprogram selections are made. If you are not selected for the sub-programme, your application will be published in the general SIP applicant pool and you can start to find a research team.
3. Individuals selected to participate in the subprograms will be matched by selection committees with NIH investigators.
